Mangalore, Nov 27: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) has shot up by 5.5% during October due to rising prices of food items in the country, with Shillong recording the highest increase, informs an official govt. release.
The official data on Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees (CPI-UNME) clearly indicates that among the four metropolitan cities, the maximum price rise of 8.5 per cent was witnessed in Kolkata, followed by Chennai (6.5 per cent), Mumbai (5.4 per cent) and Delhi (4.6 per cent).
According to the release, the major factor responsible for the increase in All-India general index is the food, beverages and tobacco segment, with as stated above Shillong recording the maximum increase of 14.9 per cent during the month.
However, what is interesting here to note for the city dwellers is that amongst the urban centres where the price rise during the month happens to be minimum, one such city happens to be Mangalore and the other Nagpur (each recording a comparatively small rise of 2.9%).
The latest WPI figures released by the government indicates that the average consumer price rise -- measured at 59 urban centres -- was 5.5 per cent in October, much higher than about 3% increase in wholesale prices.
