Mangalore: MSEZ Secures Final Notification

Mangalore, Nov 20: Mangalore Special Economic Zone Limited has secured the final notification for the specific purpose of special economic zone from C.J. Mathew, Development Commissioner in-charge of Karnataka, on November 7. A press release from Kumble Narasimha Prabhu, president, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Monday, stated that it marked the culmination of five years of consistent promotion efforts by the State and the KCCI as the growth engine for coastal Karnataka.

The specific purpose SEZ will get converted into broad-based SEZ once the formalities of the acquisition of 2,000

acres for the general purpose multi-product zone are completed.

The New Mangalore Port Trust and various central agencies will be involved in the SEZ. The major activity of the SEZ will now take off. All primary activities such as agriculture, transport, and services are expected to benefit from the SEZ as the value addition would be high in export activity, in terms of volume and equality. Services inside the SEZ would absorb the educated youth of the region and pave the way for all round growth, he added.

    To further clarify the exact status - this final notification for the MSEZ project is only for 588 ha (1453 acres), and a petroleum sector specific SEZ, not the entire MSEZ project as envisaged. This does not include the 2035 acres of land where the farmers and villagers of Thenka Yekkaru, Delanthabettu, Permude and Kuthethoor are opposing acquisition of their fertile lands and homes and have demanded de-notification of their lands by the govt. They are represented by the Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshane Samithi.
