Mumbai, July 4 (Mid-day):The cop yanked her out of harm’s way while fellow passengers safely removed her one-year-old child from the moving train and then pulled the chain so they could board safely

Struggling to get into a moving train after putting her one-year-old child and all their luggage on board, a 25-year-old woman nearly fell on the tracks but was saved in the nick of time by a railway cop at Kalyan station.

At the same time, fellow commuters acted quickly to ensure that the woman was not separated from her son -- not only did they carefully put him back on the platform while the train was still running, but they then pulled the chain so that mother and child could board the train safely.

According to an RPF official, Archana Tripathi might not have fallen in trouble if her husband had helped her. Instead, he boarded the train first, leaving her to haul the kid and the luggage on the train before boarding it herself, the official added.

Around 11.56 am on Saturday morning, Archana was trying to board the Godan Express (Train no 11059) to Ahmedabad, when she lost her balance and began to slip under the coach. Thankfully, this caught the notice of 51-year-old Sub-Inspector BS Narwar, from the Kalyan Railway Protection Force.

Good Samaritan

“I was standing nearby, watching passengers board the train. After the horn blew, I noticed the women running to board the train. She first put her luggage in just as the train started and then handed her son to a passenger at the doorway. Seeing the signs of danger, I started to run after the woman to try and help her,” said PSI Narwar.

“The train picked up speed and she missed the first door to coach S11, so she tried to board from the second door. But she missed again and began to slip under the train. I was right next to her, so I pulled her up before her legs could get trapped under the coach,” he added.

Right after he rescued her, a huge crowd gathered around them and a woman shouted that the child was still on the train. “If you watch the CCTV footage, you can clearly see the coordination between passengers that ensured that the women was reunited with her kid. As soon as she fell, the passenger who was holding her child screamed to another passenger on the platform who started running and caught the child. Another passenger threw the luggage on the platform,” said Senior PI Rajesh Kamble, Kalyan RPF.

The toddler was then handed over to the mother, along with her luggage. Some passengers then pulled the chain to halt the train and Archana boarded the train safely at 12.02 pm.
