Mangalore, Nov 9: People usually lack persistence to do anything. This holds well in case of language too. Persistence and perseverance will lead one to learn Tulu perfectly and acquire its linguistic knowledge as personal skills, opined Harikrishna Punaroor, former president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat.
He was addressing the gathering at felicitation ceremony, concluding ceremony of teaching Tulu to non-Tuluvas and release of books written in Kannada and Tulu languages, by various authors and published by Tulu Sahitya Academy held at Tulu Chavadi auditorium of Tulu Sahitya Academy office, here on Wednesday, November 7.
The Tuluvas usually back off from taking the lead; Matsyaganda and Bangalore- Mangalore passenger train are striking examples of helplessness of the Tuluvas, in this regard. The Tuluvas should not follow the foot-steps of others, who don’t hesitate to pursue violent ways for the betterment of their languages, rather the Tuluvas should not remain passive when Tulu is at risk, he advised.
It is not true to a certain extent that Tulu is loosing its native speakers and audience at Tulu academy. Tuluvas and other associations have been working to support existence of Tulu. Prevention is better than cure. Hence, it’s the responsibility of Tuluvas to ensure that Mangalore does not follow Bangalore which has been filled with non-Kannadigas, he cautioned.
Books must be opened up to the future generation, in order to make them aware of the wealth that Tulu and the Tulunadu has. The Tuluvas must converse with every one in Tulu, though he or she may be addressed in any language, he suggested.
He released ‘Koti Chennayya’ book, authored by Dr Vamana Nandavara, ‘Kalurti Kalkuda’ by Prof Amrut Someshwar, ‘Akkerasu Siri’ by Prof A V Navada, ‘Jogi Purusharu’ by Kudkadi Vishwanatha Rai, Vadiraj Bhat's ‘Maga Kalita Baraha’ and Yashavanthi Suvarna's ‘Mayandal’.
Bhoja Rao and D S Boloor were felicitated on the occasion.
MK Seetaram Kulal, president, Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, SH Shivarudrappa, registrar and others were present at the press conference.
