Copenhagen, June 13 (IANS): Norwegian defender John Arne Riise, who last played for his country's side Aalesund, announced his retirement from football on Monday.
The 35-year-old played a record 110 matches for his national team. Last year he played for Delhi Dynamos in the Indian Super League (ISL), reports Efe.
He is most known for his seven year stint with English giants Liverpool during which he won the Champions League in 2005. He also played for Italian club AS Roma and England's Fulham.
Riise returned to the club where he started his career three months ago after his Indian stint, but could only play six games.
The star said in a statement released on his blog that the decision was hard and painful, though when he looked in the mirror he was able to take the final step.
Riise scored 16 goals for his country during a long career of nearly 20 years.
