Panaji, Nov 4: India’s leading pop singer Remo Fernandes is amongst the several nationally acclaimed personalities chosen for coveted ICONGO award.
ICONGO, is a Delhi-based confederation of NGOs, which will be honouring the singer with "Artistes 4 change’’ award during the conclave scheduled in Delhi between November 25 and November 26.
The singer has been on the forefront of various movements in the state and had hit the headlines after declining the state government award earlier this year. Remo has vociferously gone on record against pending of public money on festivals like international film festival of India (IFFI).
Dr Verghese Kurien (Former chairman of India's National Dairy Development Board (NDDB)), Harsh Mander (IAS officer), J M Lyngdoh (former Chief Election Commissioner), Anu Aga (Former chairperson of Thermax Group and CII's western region), Arun Maira (Chairman of Boston Consulting Group in India), Crispino Lobo and Marcella D'souza (Co-founders of the Watershed Organization Trust) and Vikram Akula (Founder and CEO of SKS Microfinance) will also be honoured with the Karmaveer Puraskar.
Reacting to the award, Remo stated that the "award gives a wonderful feeling because it is not given for my music’s chart positions or sales figures; but rather for the socio-political contribution which the content of my music has made to the society".
"My songs have tried to give out positive messages about drugs, AIDS, women’s exploitation, communalism, corruption, and so on; and having this aspect of it appreciated and awarded is particularly satisfying, much more so than receiving a film or music industry award,’’ the singer stated.
"Appreciation is the greatest encouragement and motivation to do better, whether you’re a sweeper or a company director. Everyone needs a pat on the back once in a while, and I see such an award as just that – a pat on the back for a job well done,’’ Remo said.
The organization has also planned a conclave on the occasion which will discuss subject of Climate Change: Preparing India to Address Emergent Challenges, says a press note released here.
