Tumakuru, May 21: A bank employee who claimed himself to be an employee of HDFC Insurance Company over phone and cheated a businessman from the town to the tune of Rs 1.41 lac stands arrested.
Jayprakash Mondel, who hails from New Delhi, works for Kotak Mahindra Bank as clerk. A few days back, he called a cloth merchant from Turuvekere in the district named Radhashyam, telling him that an insurance policy with a maturity value of Rs 3,65,310 standing in the businessman's name had matured for payment. Introducing himself as an employee of HDFC Life, he sought payment for auditing purpose. On different occasions, he called Radhashyam and got different amounts deposited into various accounts. Total of these sums works out to Rs 1.41 lac.
When the accused again sought remittance of Rs 82,000 the businessman grew suspicious and went to HDFC Life Insurance company's branch at Bengaluru. He realized that he was taken for a ride.
After he filed a case in Turuvekere police station, a police team went to New Delhi, found out the whereabouts of Mondel with the help of local police and brought him here. He is being interrogated now.
