Mangalore, Oct 26: In order to formulate programmes of development and its implementation, census is very crucial, informed University vice-chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa here, on Wednesday October 24.
Kaveriappa was speaking after inaugurating the one-day workshop on “Census data dissemination and its impact on development.” The workshop was jointly organized by the Gandhian Studies Centre of Mangalore University and Directorate of Census Operations. He also said that census is very essential to assess the human index of the country. Before undertaking a census in the country, it is very essential to take a note of its criteria and its definitions.
Kaveriappa also advised that questionnaires should be carefully prepared. If the person who is taking the census gives wrong feedback, the whole purpose of the Census is lost, he declared.
“Indian Census is one of the world’s largest administrative exercises and the sole producer of data on various demographic, social, economic and other characteristics of the Indian population”, informed Directorate of Census Operations (DCO), deputy director G Bapuji. “In the year 1881 the first Indian Census was held after that uninterruptedly it is held once in every 10 years”, he added.
He also informed that the Census data was made available in a printed form till 1991 but in the year 1991 for the fist time it was made available through electronic floppies.
