Udupi, Oct 24: Leukoderma Vitiligo care week will be organized by Kasturba Medical College from Wednesday October 24 to Wednesday October 31.
Vitiligo is a dermatological condition characterized by the appearance of white patches of skin on different parts of the body as a result of the destruction of the cells that make pigment, a press note stated.
According to the press release, the change in the appearance caused by vitiligo can affect a person's emotional and psychological well-being and may create difficulty in getting or keeping a job.
People with this disorder can experience emotional stress, particularly if vitiligo develops on visible areas of the body, such as the face, hands, arms, feet, or on the genitals. Adolescents, who are often particularly concerned about their appearance, can be devastated by wide-spread vitiligo.
The goal in treating vitiligo is to attempt to restore colour of the skin and improve one’s appearance. Treatment choices are based on the number of white patches one has and how wide-spread they are. Vitiligo may also be hereditary, that is, it can run in families. Children whose parents have the disorder are more likely to develop vitiligo. However, most children will not get vitiligo even if a parent has it, and most people with vitiligo do not have a family history of the disorder.
There is a large amount safety attached and careful procedures performed by experts that ensure better results in healing such a disorder. He has also advised people to take the best advantage of such a Clinic, informed Dr B H Anand Rao, Medical Superintendent and Chief Operating Officer, Kasturba Hospital Manipal, in the press release.
