Karwar, Apr 30: The policemen raided a house located at Kelaginapalya in Honnavar town on Friday April 29, and arrested a couple that was found to be selling beef illegally. About 25 kg beef and liquor were seized from their home.
The arrested accused have been identified as Victor Ambrose Rodrigues and Mary Rodrigues, residents of Kelaginapalya. They used to store beef at their home for sale. The police found about 25 kg beef, minced and packed in small plastic sachets, stashed inside the refrigerator. It is said that the couple used to buy beef from a person named Ismail Bhatkal.
On Friday afternoon, two young women came in an auto rickshaw to the house of Victor Rodrigues. During the journey, they made inquiries with the auto rickshaw driver about the transportation of beef. The driver, who happened to be an activist of a pro-Hindu organization, expresses his unwillingness to transport beef in his vehicle. He conveyed this information to the leaders of his organization, it is learnt.
Gopalakrishna Bhat, representative of the pro-Hindu organization, later approached the said house in the guise of a customer and asked for beef. When Victor viewed this demand with suspicion, he said that his sisters had bought beef sometime back, claiming that he wanted to buy more. When Victor went inside to bring beef, Bhat called activists of the organization and police personnel. The police came there and arrested the couple, it is learnt.
