Bantwal, Apr 6: Thieves who gained entry into an areca nut storage godown at Talapady near B C Road, made good their escape with areca nut worth nearly three lac rupees. The godown belongs to Anwar Hussain, a resident of Pandeshwar, Mangaluru.
The theft came to light when workers attached to the godown opened its doors on Tuesday morning. They immediately conveyed information to owner, Anwar Hussain, and the town police station here.
881 kg of husked areca nut stored in gunny and plastic bags was stolen. The thieves entered the godown by bending the rods of the window on the backside, and took out areca nut bags through the same route. This godown has been targetted by thieves for the second time in the last six months. In the case of earlier theft, which occurred nearly six months back, the policemen had arrested the thieves. The policemen reportedly had asked the godown owner to install CCTV cameras and appoint watchmen, but it is gathered that these suggestions were not implemented.
Polive sub-inspector of the town police station, Gangadhar, sniffer dogs, and finger print experts, visited the spot. The policemen, who are yet to get any clue about the thieves in the present case, suspect involvement of locals.
