New jail in Kurnad-Chelur villages on 64 acre land- Dr Parameshwar

Mangaluru, Apr 3: Home minister Dr G Parameshwar on Saturday said that a new jail will be built in an area of 64 acres in the villages of Kurnad and Chelur in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

Replying to a question raised by MLC Ivan D’Souza in the Legislative Council, Dr Parameshwar said that a request has been sent to public works department (PWD) asking for a blueprint for the jail and also the budget. Once the blueprint and the budget are approved, the project will be implemented.

1 baggage scanner, 5 mobile jammers and 7 CCTV cameras have been installed at the jail on Jail Road. All the rooms in jail are checked frequently and the persons with underworld connections are housed separately in the jail with more security. Additional 5 PSIs and 33 police personnel have also been deployed at the jail, the minister revealed.

The jammer installed at the jail which has inconvenienced the residents of the area , will be repaired soon and the jammer’s control will be confined to jail premises only, he said.

Sports minister Abhayachandra Jain answering a question by Ivan D’Souza said that a football ground at a cost of Rs 1 crore has been proposed for Mangaluru city. A place at Nehru Maidan has been reserved for the same and a sum of Rs 25 lac has been sanctioned so far.
