Mangaluru, Mar 31: Officials of the town planning department of the city corporation here demolished a house located in Krishnapura fifth block on Wednesday March 30. A family that was living in this house has been driven to streets as a result.
A woman named Sunita D'Souza was living in a small house she had built for herself in the government land near Asha Wood Works, Krishnapura, since some time. A local organization had complained to the city corporation officials, duly objecting to the construction of house in public land. It claimed that the spot where the house stood had been earmarked for digging of a public well.
On Tuesday, officials visited Sunita's home and served eviction notice. It is said that MLA, Mohiuddin Bava, had instructed officials to allow the woman to live in the said house till the application filed by her for regularization of encroachment under Akrama-Sakrama scheme is disposed off.
However, at around 6 am on Wednesday, officials, backed by a posse of policemen, arrived at Sunita's doorsteps, demolished the house, and took away things found inside, the woman claimed. "I have been driven to the streets. The organization which complained against me had an eye on this land. But land required by the organization has already been set aside for it," she lamented.
