Madikeri, Mar 30: Tussle between wild animals and humans has continued in Kodagu district unabated. On Tuesday March 29, a woman was killed near Sanivarsanthe in the district.
Jayamma (80), resident of Bembalur village in Somwarpet taluk near Shanivarsanthe was walking inside the compound behind her house, when a lone tusker rushed in from a neighbouring coffee plantation. She was caught by a sense of fear, and was racing towards her house, when the elephant which followed her caught her by its trunk, tossed her away, and then trampled her with its feet, her family members said.
When Jayamma's family members and people living in the neighbourhood came out after hearing the wails of Jayamma and raised an alarm, the wild elephant went back into the coffee plantation. Kodagu divisional forest officer, Edukondala, Sanivarsanthe range forest officer, Achchappa, and others visited the spot, inspected the damage, and disbursed compensation cheque of one lac rupees on the spot. They also promised to release the balance four lac rupees at the earliest.
