Karkala, Mar 23: A man was killed after a buffalo used for Kambala races stabbed him with its horn at Iruvathur in the taluk. Ramanand (42), a resident of Peraldabettu in Renala village here lost his life in this tragedy.
The incident occurred in the plantation of Ratna Poojarthi from Iruvathur. It is said that Ramanand, who was working to look after the buffalo till three months back had resumed his work after a gap on Monday evening. The fact that he was heavily intoxicated contributed to the gravity of the tragedy, it is said.
The buffalo was in the heat, and had been tethered to a tree inside the plantation. Ramanand wanted to release it from there and put it inside the cattle shed. It is said that he overlooked the advice of the owners family not to meddle with the buffalo that was in a bad mood. The buffalo, which was in a state of agitation, chased Ramanand immediately after it was released from confinement. Although he tried his best to escape, the buffalo determinedly hunted Ramanand down and pierced his abdomen with its horn, it is said.
Ramanand, who had suffered serious injuries, died on way to Alva's Hospital, Moodbidri.
