Mangaluru, Mar 17: The Maria Paiva Couceiro memorial lecture on general safety at workplace and its importance with statutory implications was held at the School of Social Work Roshini Nilaya on Thursday March 17.
Deputy director of factories, K G Nanjappa was the resource person of the lecture.
He emphasized and explained the needs to practice safety measures to minimize loss to lives and property.
"A person goes to work to earn daily bread for himself and his family. In this scenario if he meets with an accident at the work place he might lose his life or might become handicapped. Hence safety at the workplace becomes extremely important."
"Unsafe work conditions and unsafe workplace account to 98 percent of the accidents at workplace. Further, 88 percent of accidents are due to unsafe work practices and 10 percent is the unsafe working conditions. Hence if we follow safe work practices and make the workplace safe, then we can avert hazards and accidents."
Speaking in the formal function the founder principal of Roshini Nilaya College Dr Sr Olinda Periera hailed the service of Sr Maria Paiva Couceiro and said, "It was the courage of Maria Paiva Couceiro that instilled confidence to start this college. She always had a smile on her face. Being always cheerful, she believed in service of the poor through a smile on her face. She always used to motivate us by saying, 'There is no room for discouragement'. She was so lively when she was alive that I still feel that she is walking in the campus."
President of the Mangaluru chapter of alumni association of School of Social Work, Roshini Nilaya, Steven Pinto welcomed the gathering.
Secretary of the alumni association, Usha Rani, principal of the institute, Dr Sophia Fernandes were present on the occasion.
