Tokyo stocks gain from the off on Wall Street's rise, yen's retreat

Tokyo, Mar 10 (IANS): Tokyo stocks made firm gains as markets here opened on Thursday, with investor sentiment buoyed by a rise in oil prices sending US shares higher overnight and the yen's retreat supporting exporter issues.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 139.25 points, or 0.84 percent, from Wednesday to 16,781.45, Xinhua reported.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 10.42 points, or 0.78 percent, to 1,342.75.

Notable early advancers comprised pulp and paper, mining, and rubber product-linked issues.
