Kasargod, Mar 6: Five persons from Bihar have been arrested for cheating people with the promise of washing and polishing the golden ornaments in Chandera near here. Chandera police also seized 50 grams of gold, polishing machine and various chemicals including acid from the accused.

As per details of the case, the gang of five went to the house of Pushpa at Kadappura and said they would polish the golden ornaments for some money. Pushpa gave them a chain weighing 34 grams. The team ‘cleaned’ the chain and gave back to her and told her not to touch it for the next 40 minutes to allow it to dry. Pushpa, who started doubting the gang after seeing their behaviour, checked the weight of the chain after the gang went. She, to her surprise, realised that the chain had ‘lost’ 6 grams of weight within minutes.

When the locals heard the ‘golden story’ from Pushpa, they started searching for the gang and finally found them in a lodge in Kannur. The sophisticated gang stayed in the lodge for months and carried out the business of the theft of gold from the houses of innocent women. The gang only went to the houses when men were not around and cheated the women with sweet talk. Then they would take ornaments with the promise of polishing and steal a small part from there.

Chandera police have learned through preliminary investigations that the gang had remitted Rs 4 lac to Bihar in a span of only 5 days through different banks. The gang had arrived to Kannur in December last year. Hundreds of women are believed to have lost gold to this gang.

Police are investigating while the golden team is spending the days in jail.
