Kundapur, Feb 16: Workers hired by IRB Infrastructure Developers, a firm that has been executing highway 66 widening works here, fought with each other on the night of Sunday February 14. At the end of the incident which occurred at Mullikatte within Gangolli police station limits in the taluk, one of them suffered stab injuries.
The injured worker has been identified as Venu (25), resident of Bagli Hosalli in Kolar. The person who stabbed him with a knife stands arrested by the police.
IRB Infrastructure Developers has been executing national highway 66 widening work between the town and Karwar since the last about six months. Venu works as the driver of a trailer truck connected with these works. It is said that workers had not been paid their salaries since the last three months. On Sunday, the entire wages due was disbursed to workers, and the workers, who were happy at this development, had started to get drunk since afternoon, it is gathered.
In the evening, verbal friction arose between Khanu from Odisha and Venu. At around 6 pm, the two had fought on this issue at downtown Mullikatte, it is said. The locals had intervened and stopped the fighting youngsters.
The workers then returned to the shed in Mullikatte plantation where they reside. Fight broke out again there between Khanu and Venu, at the end of which Khanu stabbed Venu with a knife in the stomach, it is learnt. Injured Venu was immediately taken to the government hospital here by his co-workers. The doctors at the hospital have been treating him. His condition is said to be serious.
Gangolli police have registered a case in this respect, and taken Khanu into custody. Investigation has been set into motion.
