Tokyo, Jan 20 (IANS): Tokyo stocks opened lower on Wednesday as traders were in circumspect mood on a continued slump in oil prices and wider concerns about the outlook for the global economy.
At 9.15 a.m. (local time) the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 106.94 points, or 0.63 percent, from Tuesday to 16,941.43, Xinhua news agency reported.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 9.53 points, or 0.69 percent, at 1,380.88.
Among notable early decliners were mining, marine transportation, and oil and coal-linked stocks.
