Mumbai, Aug 13: Congress (I) has won a good number of seats for another 5-year term in the Mira-Bhayandar municipal polls held on Sunday Aug 12. National Congress Party (NCP) has secured second place. Both the parties had held the reins in the past term, while they have contested independently during this poll.
The situation prevails fluid since none of the political parties were chosen for majority. Hence, they have no choice except to form coalition in order to govern the civic body.
Kanchana Poojary and Merlyn D'Sa
All the Mangalorean Mumbaikars who contested on Congress (I) tickets secured majority of votes. Merlyn D’Sa contested from ward 60, Kanchana Poojary contested from ward 54 and Ganesh Shetty Kadandale contested for Maharashtra Nava Nirman Sene from ward 7 have emerged victors.
Nancy I Sequeira contested from ward 66, Shivaprasad R Shetty from ward 67, Calist Cardoza from ward 55, Kamalkar S Bomkar from ward 68, Shimanthoor Padmanabha Poonja from ward 72, Rohit M Suvarna of NCP from ward 2, Usha Karkera from ward 49 and a few other Mangalorean Mumbaikars contested in the municipal polls as independent candidates.
State minister Suresh Shetty, Mira-Bhayandar MLA and state youth Congress (I) former president Mujafar Hussain, hotelier Gangadhar Payyade, Akhil Bharat Billava Association and Billava Association Mumbai president Jaya C Suvarna and others had campaigned for Congress (I).
All of them have acknowledged the support extended by the voters to Congress (I) candidates and congratulated the winners.
