Kasargod, Nov 4: The district has been witnessing a spate of violence after the three-tier local bodies election was held. Incidents of damaging electoral offices of political parties, houses of activists, vehicles, and attacks on party workers and family members have been reported.
A gang of miscreants torched Indira Bhavan housing Congress office at Vellikoth, Hosdurg here, on Monday night. The gang poured kerosene on furniture and other equipment inside the room before igniting fire. Although fire brigade staff rushed to the spot and took steps to stop the fire from spreading to other buildings, most of the things had already been burnt down. A case about this incident stands filed in Hosdurg police station.
After a gang attacked them at Kolichchal in the second ward of Panathadi panchayat, CPM activists, Chandran and Sajeev from Kolichchal suffered injuries. Office of Indian National League at Kuliyangal Hosdurg and house of Salaam, a member of district committee of National League, were damaged by a gang. Saifunnisa, wife of Salaam, and son, Rafiq, were injured in the incident. Both were admitted into a hospital.
After a gang tried to mow down four CPM activists with a car at Tiruvakkoli, they were stopped by CPM activists. These activists were then attacked. Avinash, Sujan, Harshad, Sanveer and Prajin from Kudurekkodu were injured in this incident.
The house and vehicle of Kunhiraman Nair, an independent candidate supported by United Front, was attacked by a gang at Iriyanni in Muliyar gram panchayat relating to exchange of heated words on election day. Kunhiraman's election agent, Narayana Nair, and Congress activist, Rajesh, were beaten up by a gang, after which both of them were injured and admitted into government hospital at Kasargod. A jeep parked in front of Nair's house was also damaged. The gang is said to have posed threats to Nair's wife and children. Kunhiraman's shop dealing in fruits and bakery items at Iriyanni was also damaged. Kunhiraman has complained that cash amounting to Rs 2.22 lac kept inside the shop has been robbed by the gang.
Adoor police have registered case against 25 CPM supporters in connection with this incident.
