Mangalore Aug 8: A free Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Test to check ‘Osteoporosis’ will be held on  August, 09 between 9.30 and 4 am, by the KMC hospital in association with the Meyer Vitabiotics stated a press release. The early onset of osteoporosis can be diagnosed by the non-invasive BMD Test.

A brief description of Osteoporosis: It is a bone disease whereby the bone becomes weak and fragile making it highly prone to fractures. When the body fails to form new bones or if too much of the old bone is destroyed, it results in this disease.

Women in larger numbers are affected by osteoporosis as compared to men. Unfortunately most of the women become aware of this disease only after it has reached an advanced stage, informs the press release. It further states that a patient at first does not feel the symptoms. It gets diagnosed only after a bone is fractured. Sometimes elderly persons might have a hunch back or suffer weight loss due to decrease in bone mass.

The female populace, especially post menopausal women in the age bracket above 45 years is most susceptible to this disease. However, even men above 55 years are prone to senile osteoporosis.

The press release enumerating the reasons and the risk factors states that prolonged cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol intake, deficiency of calcium and Vitamin D, excessive drinking of carbonated drinks, steroid intake and premature menopause are the major causes for the onset of osteoporosis. Other symptoms include backache, bone pains and previous history of fractures.

The BMD Test states Dr, Surendra Kamath, Orthopedic Surgeon at the KMC hospitals, is a most simple method to detect osteoporosis. Dr. Sunil Deshpande CEO of KMC hospitals stated that the aim of providing BMD Test free was to enable people, rich or poor to know their bone mineral density at the earliest stage.
