Rio de Janeiro, Oct 27 (IANS): Mexican defender Carlos Salcedo has revealed his team's desire to meet Brazil in the final of next year's Olympic men's football competition at the Maracana stadium.

Mexico defeated Brazil 2-1 in the final of the 2012 competition in London, but that success has not diminished El Tri's desire to triumph again in Rio, reports Xinhua.

"Our coach has encouraged us to believe and has spoken of what happened in 2012 in London when Mexico beat Brazil," Salcedo told Rio2016.com on Monday.

"Obviously, we would like to repeat that and create our own piece of history, playing in the final at the Maracana stadium, and winning the gold medal."

The 22-year-old Chivas player said his team does not fear Brazil in front of their home fans.

"We would like to face them in the final, but if it happens before, it will still be a beautiful game and we will have to be at 100 percent throughout," he said.

Mexico qualified for Rio 2016 by winning their regional qualifying tournament earlier this month.

Others to have already secured a berth in the 16-team competition are Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Fiji, Mexico and Honduras.
