Mangaluru, Oct 22: Relating to the incident in which a stpme was thrown at Kumpala mosque and its window pane was shattered at midnight recently, two persons have been arrested by Ullal police. After interrogating them and verifying different facts, they were produced in the court on Wednesday October 21.
The arrested accused, Ganesh (33) and Ankiit (27), both from Kumpala, were remanded to judicial custody. It is gathered that initially, the police had arrested Ganesh, and during his questioning, he spilled the beans about the presence of Ankit near the mosque at the time of the above incident.
The policemen learnt that Ganesh, who was a liquor addict, was returning home after getting drunk on Monday night in his motor bike, when he picked up Ankit who was waiting by the road at Kumpala. When the motor bike reached near the mosque, out of drunken stupor, Ganesh tossed a stone at the mosque, shattering the window glass. It is said that Ankit did not notice that the stone had damaged the glass. Afterwards, Ankit led Ganesh away to his home. Policemen have charged Ankit with helping Ganesh to go away from the scene of crime.
Stone had been thrown at the mosque at around midnight after all the programmes had concluded and some people were sleeping inside. The accused, who had come to the spot in a motor bike, had sped away after the Khateeb flashed light at the window. Under the guidance of assistant superintednent of police, Ullal polcie had ensured that this incident did not evoke unrest in the area.
