Mangalore, Aug 1: A programme on “Talamaddale and discussion on Yakshagana tradition” was held on Tuesday, July 31, at the Government PU College, Car Street here. This programme was organized on the occasion of the inaugural function of the activities of the Kannada Literary and Cultural Association (KLCA) of the school, under the aegis of the DK chapter of Kannada Sahitya Parishat (DKKSP).

Speaking on the occasion DKKSP president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura stated that The Kannada Development Authority (KDA) will have a discussion on introducing Talamaddale in schools, as Kannada flourishes in the art form.

According to Kalkura, the KLCA has been inaugurated in many schools for organizing cultural programmes. Kannada language blooms and develops through Yakshagana. Therefore, it should become part of education in schools, for which an atmosphere conducive for learning Kannada must be initiated in schools, he averred.

Further Pradeep Kalkura informed that DK district is considered the land of intellectuals because citizens here have endeavoured to revive the rich art of Yakshagana. 

Yakshagana artiste Seraje Seetharam Bhat stated that Yakshagana is a store-house of rich literature which is presented before the people in a simple manner by the artistes. In his opinion the ‘arthagarike’ of Yakshagana artistes Sheni Gopalkrishna Bhat and Shankarnarayana Samaga itself can be converted into a rich literary work.

He proudly declared that the flavour of Yakshagana has spread across the globe.

This speech was followed by a Talamaddale episode ‘Sharasethu bandha’ with artistes S Shankaranarayana Karanth (bhagavathike), Krishnaiah Achar (maddale), Vedavyasa Rao (chende), Seraje Seetharam Bhat (Arjuna), S Vasudev Rao (Hanuman) and G K Bhat. 

Litterateur Janardhan Hande was also present on the occasion.
