Mangalore, Jul 30: A public contact cum grievances meeting was held at Sri Narayana Sabha Griha Permude where deputy commissioner M Maheshwar Rao came to meet the residents along with Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) land acquisition officer Vijayakumari Shenoy and Mangalore SEZ chief operating officer A G Pai here, on Sunday July 30.

Hundreds of residents of Permude region welcomed the first citizen of the district, the deputy commissioner in a novel manner, by wearing black ribbon band around their foreheads as a mark of protest against the land acquisition process for Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

The residents shouted slogans in unison “We do not want SEZ project" at the grievances meeting. They displayed hostile banners in Kannada where KIADB in one of the banners hung outside the venue was addressed as ‘Capitalist’. The dais was also adorned with apt cartoons, placards and caricatures depicting the ill-effects of SEZ.

The major grouse of the public is that KIADB has plans to acquire around 760 acres of private land and 108 acres of government land in Permude village alone and by the said act more than 460 families will be displaced.

Even though the DC spoke about attractive rehabilitation and resettlement packages, which promised maximum rate for the land, training and jobs for those who lose their land, the residents lead by Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Vedike activists were not pacified and they vociferously opposed the acquisition move of KIADB and refused to give up their lands for the said purpose.

The efforts of the MSEZ CEO A G Pai’s to pacify the villagers was in vain and as the protest started gathering momentum, this ultimately made the DC to lose his patience and retort “I am not your servant to obey your orders. I came here to listen to your grievances. I am the deputy commissioner, so give due respect to my position” he ordered.

Also present at the meeting was Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Vedike president advocate Madhukar Amin Shibaroor, secretary Lawrence D’Cunha, ZP member Victoria D’Cunha and JD(S) leader J S Noronha.

No residents should spare their beautiful & green land which produces the grains to survive to those who proclaim for the so called devolopment. NO development is above the agriculture. If any one wants to develop the place they should go to barren land provided they compensate the owners properly and the development will not affect the enviornment. More over, the qualified locals should be given priority when employing.

I cannot understand why coastal areas are being developed. The recent UN report clearly indicates that by the year 2040 all coastal land will be submerged by sea water due to the effect of global warming. The Government I feel has not taken note of this warning and advice given by UNO.

Some times people have to wonder, how politicians and their cronies handle helpless poor people. In late 60's Indira Gandhi Government took away the land from wealthy and Middle class land owners and gave it to landless farmers and others.(Form 7) Now Late Indira Gandhi's daughter-In-Law and Her Congress party takes back the land from Farmers and gives to the wealthy Industrialists,in other way to say Capitalists.

Just recently it was said that Rice farming fields are dwindling in Udupi area. Now the same Udupi officials are supporting the land grab. They are like snakes with split tongue. Already, thousands of acres land is gobbled up by Nagarjun Project and now more will be gone for MSEZ. I am very proud of the people who stand up for their rights. God bless you all.

Promises of employment and other incentives are mostly a hog-wash. NRIs who live ten thousand miles away and boast about MSEZ, the greatness and prosperity with great jobs, should come back, get a job in MSEZ and live next to that Zone. Then enjoy the beautiful landscape of MSEZ and the fresh breeze flowing from that landscape.

NRIs are not going to suffer the hardship,Pollution and rising temperature, but the local people who lived here in Mangalore are the victims. Ground Soil Pollution,Air pollution and Water Pollution plus many other problems to add up. Keep fighting until you win. Staying United means strength and achievement.

Protesting with bunchful people without taking confidence of real needy people will create more complications and the sufferes are poor needy people, protesters may gain their profit, so it is better to go with proper preparation and in politeway, at least respect the people who are coming with cause.

It appears that KIADB is acting as Karnataka Irrigation & Agriculture Destruction Board to help SEZs. All these meetings are to create records that they called meeting and told everyhting to farmers and that farmers agreed to that!!! Records of the meetings should be verified by the NGOs and farmers.
