Mangalore, Jul 30: At a meeting of Dalits organized by the police department here on Sunday, July 29, the ASP B S Lokesh Kumar stated that police will take necessary action against all those violating the ban order on arrack, although the task of enforcing the ban on arrack imposed in the State from July 1, was in the hands of the excise department, he added.

The ASP in the course of the meeting informed that a joint committee of the excise and police departments has been set up at various levels in the district to ensure effective implementation of the government policy.

Answering a query the ASP  stated that people had the option of calling up various numbers publicized by both the departments in case of violations of the ban. The two departments would jointly or severally deal with such instances, he added.

When it was brought to his notice by L Shekhar, DYFI district committee member, that bidi companies were disregarding a tripartite settlement in paying the Dearness Allowance arrears and making workers sign false undertakings, Kumar advised that one of the aggrieved workers should lodge a police complaint against the owners.

SP Annigeri advised the Dalits that the matter relating to conduct of statutory meeting for reviewing the progress of schemes meant for their community be taken up with the Deputy Commissioner.

Annigeri also agreed to adopt a resolution seeking appointment of a permanent social welfare officer for Dakshina Kannada.
