Mangalore, Jul 20:  The deputy commissioner and board president M Maheshwar Rao of  the district WAKF Board, under his presidentship held a meeting, to deliberate on the developments within the WAKF institutions in the district here, on Thursday July 19.

The participants in the course of the meeting informed that the Kendra Jumma Masjid at Bunder, which has over half acres of land, is now being used as an entombment site. They also said that the land was not sufficient for burial of the dead bodies.

Reacting to this, the DC asked the members to find out if there were any private lands available for making an entombment.

The participants brought to the deputy commissioner’s notice the issue of some private builders illegally taking charge of the land at Old Kent road and putting up an apartment on land allotted for the burial ground.

They alleged that the uncertainty of decision will create problem for the mosque, as lots of devotees gather at the mosque for prayers during the two major festivals. Hence they demanded that Rao should look into the matter, find out the status of the case and solve it as early as possible.

Another member raised the issue that the WAKF Board provided scholarships to girls studying in SSLC for education. But since past two years, the board has not been providing the amount in spite of candidates sending their applications to the board.

The DC informed the gathering that a sum of Rs 13 lac was granted to various masjids for their constructions and maintenance, last year.
