Mangalore, Jul 14: Random checking of vehicles arriving into and departing from the city continued at key points.

Late on Friday evening and night, all vehicles going in different directions were stopped and checked at Nantur junction where two national highways - NH 13 and NH 17 - intersect each other. It caused a bit of inconvenience to many but the police said it had become necessary in view of certain developments in the district.

A police official, on condition of anonymity, disclosed to Daijiworld that this measure is being taken in compliance with orders from the higher level. It is said to be a three-pronged action against reported entry of Naxalites into the district, illegal transportation of arrack which has been banned in the state and also to keeps tabs on persons driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

It has been noticed that during the past year, several young lives have been lost as a result of driving under the influence of alcohol.
