Mangalore, Jul 13: Ryan Prashanth an 18-year-old boy hailing from a poor family in Manjanadi near here has been gifted a second life after undergoing a rare surgery at Unity Hospital here recently.
Oncosurgeon of Unity Hospital Dr Jalaluddin Akbar K C said that the patient was diagnosed with ‘Pheochromocytoma’ (tumour of the adrenal gland) in the last week of April.
Though he was taken to many other hospitals by his parents, surgery was denied by all the other hospitals owing to high-risk nature of the surgery, he said.
He further said that the increase in blood pressure led to heart failure had worsened the condition of the patient.
Prashanth was admitted at Unity Hospital on Wednesday June 13 and underwent a detailed CT scan, Dr Akbar. The case was appropriately diagnosed by Dr Karthik, he added.
The operation for removal of tumour was successfully performed on Friday June 29. The surgery went on for six hours and the tumour of around 8 centimetres size was removed.
The surgery was successful with the cooperation of anesthetist Dr Suresh, cardiologist Dr Ashfaq, Dr Narasimha Pai and physician Dr Mohammed Ismail.
The entire expenses of the surgery were taken by the hospital, he added. Hospital medical director Dr CP Habeed Rehman and pathologist Dr J P Shetty were present at the press conference.
