Mangalore, Jul 10:  The head post office in Pandeshwar play host to an exhibition of several numismatic collections of M R Pavanje. This exhibition was held under the aegis of Dakshina Kannada Philatelic and Numismatic Association (DKPNA) here, on Sunday, July 8.
 
The coins collection displayed in the exhibition belonged predominantly to the Satavahana dynasty, which existed from 200 BC to AD 250. These coins may be considered as very rare historical documents, disclosed Mr Pavanje. According to Pavanje one analysis made from the quality of these coins is the fact that they were made of cheap metals, clearly indicating financial crisis faced by the Satavahana dynasty during their issue. This could most probably be due to war situation prevailing at that time, he stated. 

Moreover according to Pavanje these coins were minted in an alloy named ‘potin’, made of mixed metals having an excess of the tin metal. The potin coins are basically thin and brittle too.

Also displayed at the exhibition were several other coins of both ancient and modern times. These were the new quarter dollar coins of USA minted in the names of different states. Some uncirculated coins of India and other countries like Holland, Germany, Finland, France and Luxembourg, which attracted maximum attention from the gazers. 

The viewers were able to observe and get a very good idea about the coins, in view of the systematic arrangement of the coins made alongwith all the details like date of minting, reason for minting, historical and political significance written on the tag.
