Mangalore Jul 9: The DK unit of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike has requested the regional transport office (RTO) here to seize all overladen lorries transporting manganese ores, timber and granite in the district.

The Vedke has alleged that such vehicles had extensively damaged the roads in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

H Shashidhar Shetty, president of the unit, in his letter to the RTO, pointed out that some overloaded lorries were still plying on the highways in violation of the recent ban order imposed. Due this gross indiscipline, the highways in the two districts had been severely damaged by the manganese-laden lorries and had also created problems for other vehicles and pedestrians, he charged.

Shetty further urged that if this menace is left unchecked the roads would soon wear out, and therefore in his letter to RTO requested them to seize such errant vehicles.

According to Shetty, the RTO should impose speed limits and install speed governors to put a check on express buses plying between Udupi and Mangalore.
