Roma, Sep 17 (IANS): Former German international goalkeeper Oliver Kahn defended his compatriot Marc-Andre Ter Stegen for conceding a goal from over 60 yards that held his team to a 1-1 draw against AS Roma in a Champions League match.
Roma's midfielder Alessandro Florenzi caught Ter Stegen out of his position with an audacious but accurate long-range shot from over 60 yards at the Stadio Olimpico here on Wednesday.
Barcelona were leading 1-0 at the time through a Luis Suarez headed strike in the 21st minute.
But 10 minutes later, Florenzi beat Ter Stegen with the stunning strike.
Roma managed to contain the potent Barcelona offence and bravely held on for a draw.
"If you're asking me if it was a mistake of the goalkeeper, I think it was not," Kahn told Sky TV Channel, when asked if Ter Stegen could have done anything to stop the goal.
Kahn also said that Ter Stegen should close the page on what has happened and to keep to his own style.
