Bangalore, Jul 9: The state government has declared Monday, July 9 as a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, as a mark of respect to the former prime minister Chandra Shekhar who passed away on Sunday, July 8.

Accordingly, all schools and colleges, government offices, banks etc will remain closed on Monday.

Since the late Chandra Shekhar had close links with Karnataka, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy is said to have taken special interest and declared a holiday in deference to the departed leader.

    It was needless to declare a public holiday by the Karnataks Govt., just because he was closely associated with the Chief Minister,on the contrary a day's salary worked on that day could have been donated to the flood affected people in the state,in memory of the departed P.M., a three minute silence could have been observed, I think this holiday is uncalled for.
