Beltangady, Jul 7: Two persons who were trying to sell some stones as diamonds were arrested by District Crime Investigation Bureau (DCIB) on Friday July 6. The arrested have been identified as Kasim (70), a resident of Nekkiladi near Kadaba and Sikhandar Ahmad (30) of Savanoor in Haveri district.
The duo had come in contact with one Rajesh from Mangalore whom they told that they had diamond worth Rs 1 crore with them. Rajesh was told that they had 9 diamonds which he could procure after paying cash. Accordingly Rajesh had come to Beltangady on Thursday July 5.
He met the duo and after negotiating agreed to buy the diamonds for Rs 31 lac. He even bought one precious stone from them paying Rs 5,000 in advance. However, he was not certain about the authenticity of these stones. So he went to a jewellery shop in Mangalore where he was told that they were not diamonds but some stones like the Red Ruby, Blue Sapphire or American Diamond.
He immediately tipped-off the police in this regard. Accordingly the DCIB police got into action and arrested the duo with duplicate stones near Beltangady bus stand. They later revealed that they had purchased these stones from one Hassainar Haji, a resident of Kottambadi near Napoklu in Madikeri a year ago. Eversince they were trying to sell them for Rs 1 crore but had not been able to get any customer.
The police sources said that the original price of these duplicate diamonds would be not more than Rs 50,000.
