Mangalore, Jun 26: The office-bearers of the district branch of state rural development and panchayat department staged a dharna in front of the zilla panchayat against the GP vice-president of Balpa village, Sullia, who allegedly assaulted the secretary of gram panchayat by hitting him with slipper.

Raja Hanumanthappa, the secretary of gram panchayat, was not only hit but also threatened by Kusumavati Bhudengi, vice president of the gram panchayat, the union members said.

The union also demanded the CEO of zilla panchayat to tighten the security provided to secretaries and employees working in the gram panchayat following the incident.

P L Prakash Shetty, president, U D Shekar, vice president, Vedav Bantwal, treasurer, Sushil S Hedge Beltangadi, president of taluk unions, Sundara Putturu, Srinivasa Bantwal, Madhava Amin and others were present.
