Udupi, Jun 25: The new office-bearers for Konkani Sanghatan of the district were elected on Sunday June 24 during the first annual general body meeting of the association held at Don Bosco Hall here. 

Veronica Cornelio, former Udupi taluk panchayat president, held the proceedings of election. The office-bearers were elected for the term of next two years. 

Dr Gerald Pinto of Kallianpur was elected as the president while Ignatius Monis of Moodbelle was elected as the vice-president. Louis D’Almeida of Manipal was elected as secretary while Godfrey D’Souza of Udyavar, was elected as treasurer and Anita Monis of Manipal was elected as joint secretary. 

The out-going office-bearers Alphonse D’Costa, Walter Cyril Pinto, Valerian Fernandes, Cyril Mathias and Lidwyn Pinto were present on the occasion.

Konkani Sanghatan of Udupi district is open to all those residents of Udupi or who were the past residents of Udupi and are now residing outside the district/ state and abroad. 

The objective of the organization would be to promote Konkani literature, culture, art and Konkani language. This organization would help state and national-level Konkani organizations to organize their activities in the district.

Udupi has been proposed to become a diocese.  This calls for the urgent need to strengthen this organization in order to promote Konkani in the region. All those residents of Udupi, residing across India with their origins in Udupi and abroad, are urged to support Konkani organization.
