Berlin, Aug 29 (IANS): The "Wolves" staged a dominant performance to reap their second win of the season against harmless Schalke at the opener of the third round in the German Bundesliga late Friday.
Bas Dost opened the scoring for Wolfsburg at the first half before the second-half goals by Ricardo Rodriguez and Timm Klose sealed Schalke's first loss of the season, Xinhua news agency reported.
Both sides started offensively minded into the game yet it were the hosts who took the reins to break the deadlock with 17 minutes into the encounter, as Dost volleyed home a pinpoint cross by Christian Traesch.
Wolfsburg's opener seemed to be a wake up call for the visitors as Schalke turned up to produce goal scoring opportunities but neither Leroy Sane nor Klaas-Jan Huntelaar were able to slot home from promising positions before the break.
The hosts caught a bright start into the second half thanks to Schalke's Sead Kolasinac, who brought down Luiz Gustavo inside the box allowing Rodriguez to slot home the awarded foul play penalty at the 59th minute.
Despite a two-goal lead the "Wolves" were not done with the scoring as Rodriguz corner found Klose, whose volley tripled the lead and killed the game at the 61st minute.
With the result, Wolfsburg earned their second win to climb atop the standings with seven points whereas Schalke suffer their first loss to slip on the 7th place with four points.
The following fixtures are scheduled for Saturday: Stuttgart face Frankfurt, Augsburg see newly promoted Ingolstadt, Cologne encounter Hamburg, Mainz host Hannover, newly promoted Darmstadt clash with Hoffenheim, Bayern Munich meet Bayer Leverkusen.
