Sullia, Jun 22: The state High Court has refused to grant bail to the third accused who is allegedly involved in throwing acid on lawyer and former town panchayat president, M Venkappa Gowda here a few months ago.
In the acid attack Venkappa's wife Chandana Devi too suffered injuries. The seriously injured M Venkappa Gowda was admitted at hospital in Mangalore hospital. A police team led by circle inspector Karunakar Shetty had arrested the accused, Kallagundy beedi contractor Beedi Usman, his jeep driver Narayan Gowda, Santhosh Gowda, a resident of Delampady in Kasargod district and presented them before the court. They were later remanded to judicial custody.
None of the lawyers of Sullia Bar association dared to contest on behalf of the accused since the acid attack was carried out their own president, M Venkappa Gowda. There were rumours of lawyers from Madikeri, Puttur, Mangalore, Kasargod, who would arrive, to contest the case. Finally, a lawyer from Mangalore came forward to submit the petition for granting bail for the accused at Sessions Court. But Sessions Court refused bail to accused. The petition was presented by the main accused, Usman and the third accused, Santhosh Gowda. HC has refused grant bail to both the accused, since the crime was committed on the president of Bar Association in an inhuman manner.
It has also learnt that HC has investigated the bail petition submitted by the main accused, Usman.
Fourth accused not traced: The fourth accused Ravi, friend of third accused Sathosh has been absconding since the crime was committed.
