Cincinatti, Aug 20 (IANS): Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka said Australian Nick Kyrgios has not apologised to him for his on-court "banged your girlfriend" sledge.
Kyrgios was fined $12,500 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and further punishment may still be forthcoming after he jibed at his opponent, World No.5 Stan Wawrinka during a match in Montreal last week saying, "(Thanasi) Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend. Sorry to tell you that, mate".
The comment did not go down well in the international tennis circuit.
Wawrinka defeated Borna Coric 6-3, 6-7, 3-6 in Cincinnati Masters on Wednesday. She is believed to be dating Croatian tennis player Donna Vekic, whom Kyrgios claims fellow Aussie tennis player Kokkinakis bedded.
"No, he (Kyrgios) didn't apologise, no. But I prefer not to talk about him. Thank you,” Wawrinka was quoted as saying by Sky Sports on Wednesday.
"I'm there, I'm trying to do my job, Today, I'm happy with the way I fight, even if I was playing bad tennis," he said.
When asked if he was ready to draw a line under it, he said, "I'm trying to put it away. But what's happened, people don't see exactly the consequence for everybody. So I'm trying to put it away".
Vekic,19, spoke publicly for the first time on Tuesday since Kyrgios' infamous sledge, saying she hoped the controversial Australian would learn a lesson from the outrage.
Swiss legend Roger Federer, among several other leading players, criticised Kyrgios for his outburst.
