London, Aug 12 (IANS): Chelsea's first team's doctor Eva Carneiro faces demotion after manager Jose Mourinho criticised her for entering the field during the critical stoppage time in the team's 2-2 draw against Swansea in an English Premier League match.
Mourinho expressed that Carneiro's role within the English club would be changed in the coming days and that she would be excluded from all Chelsea's matches and training sessions, British media reported on Wednesday, reports EFE.
Carneiro stepped onto the field to treat injured Eden Hazard during stoppage time, while an apparently furious Mourinho opposed the decision, especially given that Chelsea only had 10 players on the field at the time, as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was out with a red card.
"I wasn't happy with my medical staff because even if you are a medical doctor or secretary on the bench, you have to understand the game," Mourinho said in the post-match press conference on Saturday.
"If you go to the pitch to assist a player, then you must be sure that a player has a serious problem. I was sure that Eden didn't have a serious problem. He had a knock and was very tired," the coach argued.
"My medical department left me with eight fit outfield players in a counter attack after a set piece and we were worried we didn't have enough players left," Mourinho explained.
Carneiro, for her part, wrote on her Facebook account, "I would like to thank the general public for their overwhelming support. Really very much appreciated."
