Goa to be plastic-free zone: CM

Panaji, Aug 11 (IANS): Goa will turn into a plastic-free zone, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said on Tuesday.

Parsekar, also a minister for science and technology, replied in the affirmative to a question by BJP legislator from Cuncolim Rajan Naik, who wanted to know if plans were on to make Goa a "plastic-free zone".

Carrying pet bottles has been banned on major beaches and the five wildlife sanctuaries in the state.

The Goa government is also in the process of making dumping plastic in public places a cognizable offence, which will attract a prison term and fines.
