Margao, Jun 8: Congress workers rejoiced here when congress leader and MLA of Margao constituency Digamber Kamat was sworn in as the 19th chief Minister of a five-member coalition cabinet in Goa.
Kamat, born on March 8, 1954 in Margao, began his political career in 1986 as a councillor of Margao Municipal Council.
After passing BSc he started as a real estate developer business. He has served as president of various clubs and organizations.
During this time he got a long opportunity to do social work, and then his supporters forced him to take a plunge into politics. He contested the MMC election and got elected as councillor in 1986.
In 1989 he tried his luck by contesting the assembly election on a Congress ticket, but he lost. Then, in 1994 he contested the assembly election on a BJP ticket and got elected. He has remained unbeaten ever since.
Two years back he quit BJP and rejoined to Congress, got elected in the by-election and also in June 2, 2007 election.
He has always said that he has the dream to make Margao "city no. 1''. Now that he has been elected, the citizens say he has a chance and he has to keep his promise of making it so.
