Mangaluru, Aug 8: Congress supported gram panchayat members, Rukiya and Uday Bhat have been elected as president and vice president of Gurpur gram panchayat respectively, the result of which was announced in the state High Court on Thursday August 6.
Rukiya bagged 23 votes, while Uday Bhat got 22 votes. BJP-supported members of the gram panchayat had boycotted the election process, in protest against the fact that the entire election process was held for the second time. In the first election process, Congress members had remained away, and BJP-supported candidates were declared winners. The high court had thereafter nullified this election.
The election was held afresh as per the directions of the high court on July 23. The sealed ballot boxes were kept in the treasury of the district administration. As per the high court directive, votes were counted, and the result was submitted to the high court in sealed envelope. The high court has upheld this election, and as a result, Congress has risen to power in Gurpur gram panchayat
