Taluk panchayat employee consumes poison on claims of harassment

Chamarajanagara, Aug 8: An employee of the taluk panchayat here consumed poison and tried to end his life at the office, alleging mental harassment suffered at the hands of the executive officer. The incident occurred on Friday August 7.

Mahadevaswamy, a resident of Udigala village in the taluk, who works as second division assistant in the taluk panchayat, fell ill after consuming poison. He was immediately shifted to the district hospital here for treatment.

It is said that the employee, who consumed poison at around 12 pm, told his colleagues that taluk panchayat executive officer (EO), Revanna, had been mentally harassing him. He said with tears rolling down his cheeks that his request for leave was not granted even when he was suffering from chikungunya, and that it had become impossible to work under the EO.

Mahadevaswamy collapsed to the ground and fell ill when speaking to colleagues. His colleagues immediately made arrangements to admit him into the district hospital.

Zilla panchayat chief planning officer, Vasundhara Devi, visited the hospital and spoke to him. A report about the incident was filed in the local police station.
