Farmer suicides - Deve Gowda angry, Siddu to visit victims' houses

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jul 18: JDS national president and former Prime Minister, H D Deve Gowda, accused both central and state governments for the serial suicides of farmers in Karnataka. He placed onus on both these governments for their failure in protecting farmers interests, addressing a press conference at his residence here on Friday July 17.

'Both Karnataka and union government have to own responsibility for these deaths. Protecting the interests of farmers should be given paramount importance, in addition to pursuit of dreams like Narendra Modi's Skill India and Siddaramaiah's Ahinda upliftment,' he analyzed.

He blamed faulty policies of these two governments and apathy towards pro-farmer programmes, claiming that these errors have been forcing food providers of the nation to choose death over life. He warned that unless the governments sit up, take notice, and take remedial measures urgently, the issue might snowball into a major crisis.

'When I met Narendra Modi, I had urged him to show more care and concern towards agriculturists. But my plea did not have the desired affect. BJP national president, Amit Shah, came to Karnataka and gave a call for strengthening of BJP in South India. He did not speak anything about the deceased farmers,' he recalled.

Gowda said that when his party raises the issue of farmer suicides, Siddaramaiah charges it of conspiring to unseat his government. He wanted to know from the chief minister as to whether all the farmers who committed suicides were from JDS, and none belonged to Ahinda communities.

Siddu to addresses citizens on radio, to visit houses of farmers

Bengaluru, Jul 18: A sense of urgency and alertness seems to have taken root in the state government as well as Congress party after former chief minister and union minister, S M Krishna, visited Mandya relating to suicides by farmers. The government as well as Congress party have planned to rush to the rescue of farmers during this week end.

A la Mann Ki Baat of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, Siddaramaiah, announced his plans to address farmers of the state on radio at 8.30 am on Saturday, with a view to instill a sense of confidence and courage among the farmers. He has also planned to visit houses of farmers from Mandya and Mysuru districts, who ended their lives recently.

The chief minister has also written to all the district in-charge ministers, to meet families of farmers who have committed suicide, and listen to their grievances. In the letter which was dispatched on Saturday, he asked these ministers to tour their districts, hold meetings with farmers, and submit reports to him.

Not to fall far behind, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president, Dr G Parameshwar, too wrote letters to all the party legislators on Saturday, directing them to hear problems of farmers, suggest remedial measures, and send reports thereof to him.

Farmers suicide has become vote bank politics. If you show pity on farmers you get votes.Farmers commit suicide for various reasons mostly related to loan and alcohol addiction. For last 60 years we kept the farmers poor and illiterate as a vote bank. Now the politicians shed crocodile tears.

The State Govt., has taken a right approach to investigate and punish those money lenders who are fleecing the farmers with exorbitant interest rates. The Govt., should defer the loan recovery by banks from farmers in distress and help them. Also come to the rescue of farmers by buying their agricultural produce at administered prices so that the loan burden eases to a certain extent. Compared to the wastage resulting in escalation costs of govt., projects in thousands of crores (which is basically corruption) this will bring relief to the poor farmers.

None of the farmers belong to category of Bhaagya schemes of khangress govt. Hence there is no hopes for them. Govt will only act if a cattle chors and transporters or the illegal slaughter houses and butchers commit suicide.

    Mr. Deve Gowda & Sons,

Please stop this blame game & accusing one another. U have been given 61 armed police protection & Government is spending about RS.30 crores per year for your protection as per Media reports. Get rid of this wasteful government expenditure. Request the Government that U don't need so much security. Distribute the money to the Farmers. U being an MP & your Sons being MLAs having accumulated multi crores of rupees. Have a heart to donate to poor farmers. Don't expect PMs & CMs to handle every thing. U have an equal responsibility to stop farmers suicide. Not just sitting idle & giving useless press conferences. No one wants to hear your lectures.

    Not concerned of farmers death
Not concerned of death of the poor or innocent.
    Price rise is killing people.
Many leaders Playing politics on deaths, rapes, murders to gain popularity to amassed wealth and political power.
What a state of affair and they think people can always be fooled.
What right a person has, if amassed wealth through corrupt means, and by killings and then show sympathy of poor farmers death?

Poor lives are lost and possibly because the farmers were not able to repay the loans with the high rates of interest from professional money-lenders.

This situation is nothing new and now what can The Government do to ensure that there are no future repetitions of this kind. There is no point in any one getting angry with any one.

It looks that the solution to this problem is to help farmers repay the loans with of course 'WRITING OFF THE INTEREST'. For the future... Government should come forward to make available interest free loans wherever necessary. THE FORMATION OF A HIGH POWER COMMITTEE may help.
