Mangaluru: Landslip at Farangipet - Three labourers dead

Mangaluru, Jul 14: Three labourers died after they got trapped under a pile of mud following a landslip at a construction site at Farangipet near here on Tuesday July 14.

The incident occured at a commercial complex construction site when a hillock behind the site caved in and collapsed on the labourers. The construction is being undertaken by Sayyad Bava Builders.

Three workers were trapped while three others were rescued.

The three who were trapped in the debris have been identified as Milon, Thorikol and Maiminol, all from West Bengal. 

A few others labourers escaped with minor injuries.

Fire service personnel along with locals conducted the rescue operation, and after much efforts, the bodies of the three labourers were recovered.

SP Sharanappa rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation.

    Sheer negligence on the part of the Cite engineer and the contractors involved. Laborers take risk for lively hood and face worse calamity like this. R.I.P.
    No value for poor, helpless humans.
    I am wondering how they built City Centre Mall, complex in Mangaluru? Great Civil engineering job considering the height from the foundation to Light House hill behind.

    Very sad incident. Almighty give strength to the family to bear loss of their loved one. RIP. Here we can see another danger in photo 5, 7, 8 & 9. Huge number of spectators standing on roof top of adjacent house/building, which may not be design to take load bearing capacity foe such huge, crowed. Dear Concerned authority pls takes care of this type of issues at first step in such incidents at least in future to avoid unwanted mishaps. At least barricade the area

    I was also shocked to see the roof of the adjacent house filled with spectators! As you said, it could lead to even bigger a catastrophe of the roof is not designed to take such loads!!

    In Mumbai it has happened many a times when people get crowded especially in cantiliver balconies to watch programs, processions passing on the road and the entire balcony crashing down due to the heavy load suffering serious injuries and deaths!!

    RIP departed souls!!

    Such sort of excavation abutting clear landslide prone hillocks either for construction of structures or to make sites and dump them on the gullible is very common along the Manglure BC Road-Bantwal-Moodabidri road! Nobody is bothered no authority including tahsildar, village accountant, town municipality, forest officer-complaints to them are all in vain!! The authorities concerned should conduct a survey of such places and book those involved in such illegal activities and bring them to justice in the interest of safety of life and property of others adjoining such excavations!!

    In this case the owner and the contractor should be charged with the strictest laws and forced to pay heavy compensation for the loss of life of innocents due to no fault of theirs!!

    Finally, God knows who the structural and engg. consultants for these project were, who failed to adhere to common safety measures like building reinforced retainer wall before going ahead with their work, such people's licences should be suspended and made accountable for the accident!!!     Commencement certificate or building licence is issued by a competent authority.
    The site is surveyed and the area for construction leaving setback is marked signed and given to builder.
    Knowing one side abuts a hillock with chances of sliding the authority should, Have added .........licence subject to re enforced retainer wall or the hillock to be terraced and concerted
    These safety precaution should have been taken before granting licence, checked, and then issued.
    2nd incident in a week !

    I would bring one more aspect to your notice that without trees we will have no rains and if there are no rains there is nothing and ten years down the line there will be desertification iour our tropical region and then don't tell me animals are the cause of deforestation, we are slowly killing each other by altering seasons.i don't have any hatred towards anyone but trying to make you aware that the ecological balance all the flora fauna and forest are more important,not some stranger somewhere.t

    O God,poor workers lost their lives because of negligence of builders.why dont they take first prevention steps to avoid any accidents at construction place and go forward with work.?who will compensate their Familys now?does the builder(constructor)or govt.?if at all ?Hope in future they will at least do .May the souls of deceased rest in peace.heartfelt sympathys to their Familys.

    Very sad and unfortunate incident. My heart goes out to the bereaved family. It is a gross negligence of the builder. No botheration for safety of workers. Builders take the life of poor labours for granted.How carelessly they are playing with their worker's life. Now the poor family members are orphans due to the carelessness of the builder.When it is well known that during heavy rains there is every chance of land slide, how the builder put the people on the job just below the hillock? He has to answer and compensate the death of the labours by a good amount like Rs 10 lakh per person died.

    I am very saddened to hear this. My heart goes out to the families of the deceased. These poor construction workers came so far away in search of job to earn their livelyhood for their families and lost their lives for the carelessness of the builder & contractor. Why is the corporation not making a Safety Officer to be present at the construction site compulsory? When will the corporation open their eyes. Hope the Dy. Commissioner of the district will take cognizance of my comment and act accordingly.
