Puttur, Jul 13: The Uppinangady police raided a spot at Volalu in Bajattur village near Uppinangady and arrested three persons, apart from taking into possession two calves and confiscating several items used in the slaughterhouse. This incident occurred on Sunday July 12.
The raid was conducted on the basis of reliable information. The arrested persons are Zainuddin, Abdurrahman, and Muhammed Asif. The slaughterhouse was located in a corner of a plantation owned by Idinabba. The police took over scale, wooden block used for cutting meat, and bones of cattle from the spot.
It is said that some activists of pro-Hindu organizations had chased a pick-up truck that was coming from the direction of Golithottu, after being tipped that cattle were being transported in that vehicle. Reportedly, the vehicle entered the plantation of Idinabba, and the driver succeeded in escaping with vehicle after unloading the cattle. The activists then gathered on the national highway in front of Idinabba's house, alleging that illegal slaughterhouse was in operation in this plantation. They also passed this information to police.
The police, who arrived on the spot and conducted verification found two sheds inside the plantation, where there were signs that they were being used as slaughterhouses. Rural circle inspector, Anil S Kulkarni and Kadaba station house officer, Yogeesh Kumar, also visited the spot.
The situation turned tense after Muslim youth began to assemble at the spot. Armed reserve police contingent was summoned to the village. Police personnel thereafter succeeded in dispersing the crowds.
On Sunday evening, a youth suffered injuries from stones pelted at him at Golitottu, after two gangs were engaged in friction. A person named Jayant from Konalu, who runs a chicken centre at Golithottu, was injured in this incident. He was admitted into a private hospital at Puttur. It is said that Jayant was targetted, as the attackers suspected that he had passed on information to Hindu activists.
At the same time, four persons, identified as Fairoz (29), Abdurrahman (39), Hyder (27), and Harris (28) from Golithottu said they were attacked by over 50 persons, who accused them of illegally transporting a calf. Fairoz and Abdurrahman, who sustained serious injuries in the assault, were admitted into a private hospital in the town. They said that they were leading a calf belonging to Harris to his house from the plantation of his uncle, when a number of people including Chandra, Deekaiah Poojary, Umesh, Shekhar Pooojary, Raghunath, Jayant, Umesh Amraje, Rajesh, Vinaya and Ganesh, who came in car and motor bikes, attacked them with rods and stones, besides confining them. They also said that the gang members attacked them again in the presence of police personnel, after Uppinangady police arrived on the spot.
They said that Deekaiah has been named as an accused in a communal clash which occurred at Golithottu in the past, while Raghunath, Umesh and Harish have been among the accused who pelted stones at Karaya mosque. A case on the basis of this statement was registered in Uppinangady police station.
In this incident also, people from the two communities had gathered, after which armed reserve police accompanied by deputy superintendent of police, Bhaskar Rai and rural circle inspector, Anil S Kulkarni, arrived and scattered the crowds. On Sunday late night, stones were thrown at three shops relating to this incident, police sources said. Additional police forces were deployed in the village.
