Bengaluru: Azim Premji gives half of his stake in Wipro for charity

Bengaluru, Jul 8 (PTI): IT czar Azim Premji has given away almost half of his stakeholding in Wipro, India's third largest exporter of software services, to philanthrophy.

The Wipro's billionaire founder has given away an additional 18 per cent of his stake in the IT company for charity, thus earmarking 39 per cent of stake (worth Rs 53,284 crore) for a charitable trust.

The latest philanthrophic initiative by Premji would pump in an additional Rs 530 crore by way of dividends into the Azim Premji Trust's corpus this year.

69-year old Premji is the first Indian to sign the Giving Pledge, sponsored by billionaires Warren Buffett and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates to invite the world's wealthiest to donate majority of their wealth to charity.

"Over the past fifteen years, I have tried to put this belief into action through my personal philanthropic work...," Premji said in a letter to shareholders published in the company's annual report for the year ended March 2015.

Premji said, "Over these years I have irrevocably transferred a significant part of the shareholding in Wipro, amounting to 39 per cent of the shares of Wipro, to a Trust (of which ownership in 21.14 per cent was transferred and for the balance the Trust is entitled to beneficial interest of dividends and sale proceeds)."

The previously transferred 21 per cent stake was estimated at USD 4.3 billion. The promoter group led by Premji holds 73.39 per cent stake in Wipro.

Premji was considered the 'most generous Indian' of 2014 according to the Hurun India Philanthropy List.

He said the Trust supports the work of The Azim Premji Foundation and Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiative and thus a very significant part of the value created by Wipro, goes towards social causes.

Premji also stated in the report that economic value is sustainable only if created on a foundation of ethics and responsibility.

"For us, this is the driving force in the form of our values and is something that we will continue to remain completely committed to," he added.

The company's Social and Sustainability Initiatives are driven by the conviction that corporations should play a significant role in contributing to building a better society, Premji said.

"The owners - individuals or other entities - of such corporations can do a lot more for society, because they can choose to exercise the right of their ownership, and invest their wealth in any social cause, to their utmost," he said.

Intention matters...those spend their hard earned money on poor are really good..is it not wise to spend on needy n poor rather than spending in donations to temples, masjids, churches n the like..its foolish way to spend ones wealth on giving golden chariot or throne or head gear to idols of temples...our politicians dont spend their ill gotten wealth on poor but they amass wealth by squeezing n sucking the blood of poor..thats the difference between generous n kind hearted peoplevn goondas..

Charity is attached next to the prayer in islam... you can find multiple verse in quran, where allah says "Establish Prayer and give charity".

this is the commandment of Allah.

The Azim Premji Foundation is full of feel-good articles.

But what is missing, in my opinion, is numbers!

There is hardly any information on exactly how many children have received the benefit of Azim Premji Foundation's generosity, and how much of the charity's money has gone to the poor people.

Giving great press releases is not enough.

What people need to realise is that when the business profits are diverted to charities (owned by the family members), hardly any tax is paid.

What would be good to know is how much tax is paid before handing over the money to the family run foundation.

People must also be aware that the Governments in India have provided plenty of free land to many large IT companies. Should the companies not hand the free land back to the government first?

    FULLY DISAGREE WITH YOU.

Till last year I have worked in WIPRO..I worked for 3 years. I never felt any of our salary was below market standard.... some of us got low salary , due to not bargaining at the time of interview...Then I went to onsite, there i used to work with HCL , CTS employees.... You wont believe a 3 yeasrs (developer) exp wipro guy used to get salry more than 6 to 8 (mid level) from other company....

May be from your frend circle might have got very less salary, hence you have such opinion... But yes at the time of interview they will always start with very less salary, its in our hand to bargain and get good salary.

I have read about some billionaires of the world, some of them driving a 17 year old car etc, Walmart founder's son driving a ten year old truck.

Mr. Premji is known as a very simple person: when he lands at the Bangalore airport, he will get a taxi to reach the office or home. He tells his employees to cut off the light when not in use and he himself will cut off the light. But, he is good with the employees in giving decent salaries. If he were not generous with the employees like Warren Buffet, then he won't give away a great share of his wealth to the poor people.

..few days back when a KSA prince announced charity of his fortune, i said our AZIM PREMJI is on top in INDIAN philanthropist list..PREMJI is also very vocal against reservation system in INDIA which he says main reason for brain drain in INDIA & politics of appeasement which he says pushed a community to darkness..Once UPA Govt asked him to do something to his community particularly, but he shot back at Govt & clearly said i will do for all Indians not for any community in particular..

Mr. Azim Premji has done it again. His nobility and his generosity has no boundary because he is a generous man and also a God fearing man. His noble contributions in India will help millions of needy people that need be loved and nurtured so that those less privileged people will have a life to live and will have a face to smile.

It is a fascinating feeling to realize that so many distinguished people in this world are coming forward to disclose their actual wealth and are prepared to donate a large percentage for the worthy and needy causes. The world has also been gifted with many noteworthy individuals as well as groups who know to distribute these generous contributions for only the deserving causes, and therefore we pray that God will help these ed Agencies to monitor utilization of these donations for the right purposes.

One of the most important and deserving area that requires our focus in a country such as India is our "FAMILY PLANNING". India is a great nation that is admired by almost everyone in this world, including some of our closes neighbors. But we must find ways and means to control our population so that we realize the value of a human being from the time a child is born.

Therefore, before a child is being planned each parent have to think twice, and that needs EDUCATION and AWARENESS. It is therefore essential to educate our population on the necessity of family planning. Each and every married couple need be educated. This is where the family planning begins, and this is where the precious gifts such as from Mr. Asim Premji have to be utilized. This is the beginning of prevention that needs priority.

Then comes the next step towards the needy children that are totally neglected and are malnutritioned. This is our next priority.

All these priorities need be well sequenced so that kind hearted people such as Mr. Asim Premji are happily satisfied that their noble help is put to good use.

Thank you, Mr. Aziz and Qudha Afez.
